Shogun, Part 1 by James Clavell
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

An epic novel encompassing early 17th century Japan and its collision course with the European settlers, Clavell's novel is at time beautiful, spiritual and ruthless all at once. The continual weaving between the ever-changing motives of both John Blackthorne and the regent Lord Yoshi Toranaga provides a challenging and engaging read (or listen in my case). The plots twists never cease, nor do the endless array of characters and narratives Clavell has at his fingertips. The characters embrace archetypes of the some of the most successful politicians and leaders the world has known, while also revealing the kind of sinister traits each of us has but often suppress.

If there was a disappointment to the novel, it was that the climax was more expository than it was action-packed. Thus, the payoff, though rewarding in its own right, feels like a bit of a letdown.
