Congrats are in order for one of the first movements of ignorance, the anti-vax movement. In Europe, they are seeing the results of what is likely the effectiveness of the movement spreading the false research of men like Edmund Massey by people using their celebrity like Jenny McCarthy. McCarthy's claim that vaccines caused autism in her child (she has since claimed she cured it) was given front page news. This, from a woman who claims her degree in medicine comes from the University of Google.
From McCarthy's interview on Oprah in 2007.
The University of Google is where I got my degree from. . . . And I put in autism and something came up that changed my life, that led me on this road to recovery, which said autism—it was in the corner of the screen—is reversible and treatable. And I said, What?! That has to be an ad for a hocus pocus thing, because if autism is reversible and treatable, well, then it would be on Oprah.
Thanks to ongoing ignorance and fear, The BBC is reporting that Europe is experiencing a record measles outbreak. From the article:
Last year there were 23,927 cases and the year before 5,273. Experts blame this surge in infections on a drop in the number of people being vaccinated.
If you are concerned about vaccinations or worried about their side effects, please seek information out from your doctor, or from the National Institute of Health(NIH) or the US Health and Human Services website.
The information is readily available and reliable.
UPDATE AS OF FEBRUARY 6, 2019
Oregon is experiencing its worst outbreak of measles in decades, as 50 cases now exist and the disease is spreading to all parts of the country, the likely result of the anti-vaxx movement's grip on spreading false information and dissolving the effects of herd immunity.
