Today the New York Times did something I completely disagree with, which is published an anonymous op-ed from someone claiming to be a 'high official' inside the Trump White House. The person claims to be part of the resistance of Trump's anti-democratic ways, thwarting his temptations and instincts from inside the inner circle. While also lauding the "good things" Trump is doing, this person attempts to show that we are all okay because of what he/she is doing, along with a few others.
It did anything but that. Assuming the NY Times knows this person (and they claim to) this simply puts the United States officially into a Constitutional Crisis, wherein the sitting commander-in-chief is not completely in control of his own authority.
Now, I'm sure there are many opponents of the Trump White House who initially read this and thought this was great. However, this is only great inasmuch as you would appreciate such an op-ed piece if this was a President you agreed with. Assuming such a piece would set off huge alarms of a separate group doing their will against your beloved sitting President, then being done against any President, even one as insane as Trump is dangerous and anything but heroic.
David Frum of the Atlantic penned this piece before I could even finish the above op-ed. I agree with it completely.
If the writer(s) of the op-ed are truly going to be heroic, then they should step forward, declare that the 25th Amendment must be invoked based on what is going on inside the highest office of the land and let the Senate take it from there. If this person or persons is not willing to do such a thing, then we are left to believe essentially there is a subordinate non-elected government acting on its own, without the people's authority, and thus, could easily assume this group is hurting us as much as helping us. They could be committing treason or other illegal activities. No one knows.
What we do know is that clearly the support for Donald Trump is crashing at a rate that is dangerous considering no attempt to impeach has been made. This will only cause the President to further paranoia and self-preservation.
The New York Times showed incredibly bad judgment in my opinion, because this is news that is bad for every American, partisan and non-partisan, and dangerous news to share with our enemies.
